On the weekend of 2-4th March 2018 London Town players visited Hungary’s second biggest city: Debrecen! The trip could have started better than our flight being delayed by 5 hours (due to the #BeastFromTheEast), but in the end if was worth the suffering. Playing football in -10 degrees was somewhat unusual for London Town, but then again, Debrecen had plenty to offer to keep the  spirits high. After the match we went to watch a Hungarian Premier League game, and then partied until the early hours and tasted the incredible Hungarian dish, the Gulasz.

Jed, our one and only GK, summarised the game as follows:

On a freezing Saturday in Hungary’s second largest city, Debrecen, London Town participated in a friendly match against a local team named DEAC. In a fairly even first 15-20 minutes of the first half, the away team seized the initiative by opening the scoring with a classy dinked finish by winger, Tony Grant.

Throughout the rest of the first half, London Town had the better of the chances, in particular with striker Omar (Captain America) unlucky to put his shot just wide when 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper.

Around 5 minutes before the half time whistle, DEAC equalised with a close range finish.

The first 10 minutes of the second half followed a similar pattern to the start of second half with a couple of good saves by each keeper, before the London Town team took the lead around the 60 minute mark, however the home team soon made it 2-2, before 2 quick fire goals, one of which was a penalty, to make it 4-2 to the home team, seemingly putting the game beyond the Towners, with around 15 minutes remaining.

Funnily enough, one of the keeper’s Hungarian teammate told him which way to dive, as he knew the penalty taker well. The keeper clearly didn’t get this drift and dived the other way; legend has it he is still diving! London Town gave themselves some hope of getting a result, when Gergo scored to make it 4-3, however despite a couple of late chances, they couldn’t quite get the equaliser.
